How to Create a Bond with a New Horse

One of the most important parts of riding a new horse if creating a bond with them. Horses are very loving animals, but it does take them a while to warm up to new faces. If you are trying to help your child bond with a new horse, here are some of the things you can try. 

Take the Horse for a Walk

Establishing trust with a new horse is crucial to how well they perform on a ride. Before you try to mount a new horse and ride them, you will need to get them acclimated to you and establish trust. One of the best ways to accomplish this is by talking the horse for a walk. If you are trying to help your child create a bond with the horse, you need to let them walk the horse. 

A nice walk will not only help your child and the horse get some exercise; it is also a great way to help them start forming a relationship. If at all possible, you need to let this walk take place in a controlled environment like a stable. 

By doing this, you can reduce the chance of the horse getting scared by other animals and objects. If you do encounter objects the horse is scared of, it is a good idea to pick them up and move with them. This shows the horse there is no real danger present, which can make them more compliant and less timid. 

Grooming is a Great Way to Bond With a New Horse

Before allowing your child to groom their new horse one on one, take time to observe the animal around other horses. Seeing how a pair of horses respond to each other and the distance they keep from one another is important. During this observation period, point out information about space and gentle touch to your child. 

The grooming your child will do with the horse will not be so much about removing dirt as it will be about finding their sweet spots. When brushed or touched the right way, a horse will be extremely docile and friendly. It will take some time to find out this information, but it is worth the energy you and your child invest. If at all possible, speak with the previous owner of the horse to find out information about how to approach it and care for it.
